What is Fear?

As the old saying goes, “You Have Nothing to Fear Except Fear Itself!” How true that is!

It’s a cliche in positive psychology that FEAR is an acronym: depending on your preference it is either False Experience Appearing Real or False Experience Accepted as Real. Fear will rear its ugly head and make you believe what is not believable. It can appear and make you see a false Reality, but it is never a Reality!

Fear is how we humans have adapted to danger. It activates our “fight-or-flight” response. When faced with danger, our sympathetic nervous system produces adrenaline. This excess adrenaline prepares us to fight or to flee the physical threat. Download Fears and Phobias Brochure for more information.

What is a Phobia?

A phobia is excessive or unreasonable fear of something that is generally considered harmless. When you have a phobia, you may very well realize that your fear is unreasonable, yet you still can’t get past it. When you are exposed to the whatever it is you are afraid of, you may find yourself overwhelmed with extreme feelings of anxiety, fear, and even panic. The feelings may be so intense or unpleasant that you will go to great lengths to avoid the source of the fear.

Some Signs and Symptoms of a Phobia

If you have a phobia, you may experience many anxiety-related symptoms when exposed to the object or situation you fear. The physical symptoms of phobias are the same as those that occur with the fight-or-flight response to genuine danger.

Your anxiety and fear can range from mild feelings of apprehension to a full-blown panic attack. The level of your fear increases the closer you are to the thing you’re afraid of. It will also be higher if you cannot escape from the feared object or situation, or if it’s difficult to do so.

Overcoming Particular Fears

What maintains the fears and keeps them going? Avoiding the thing that you fear gives an immediate sense of relief in the short term. In the long term, however, the avoidance leads to embarrassment, lack of confidence and an increase in the fear. This can cause a vicious cycle. To break the cycle and overcome the fear, it is essential that you face the thing of which you are afraid. This is easier to do if you do it early on, when you first notice that there is a problem. If the fear you want to tackle is long-standing, it can still be overcome, but will take longer and require more persistence and help from others.

How Hypnosis and Emotional Freedom Techniques Can Help

I use hypnosis and Cellular Release Therapy, a hypnotic technique, to work with your subconscious to release and clear the emotional triggers that can be the source of your fears or phobias. You are always in control and aware of your surroundings, however, you are in a deeply relaxed state. With these techniques, together, we free you of the emotion associated with the the fear or phobia.

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an energy-based therapy which utilizes tapping on accupressure points. Unlike hypnosis, you are fully awake and an active participant in this process. EFT is so effective, you don’t even have to believe in it and it still works!

During an EFT session, we tap together, you on your accupressure points and I on mine, while focsuing on statements and keywords that identify the fear of phobia. You learn EFT during the session so you can continue to use it on other issues in your life.
